His trials at Dalwallinu, Merredin and Mullewa in 2012 and 2013 demonstrated that some wheat varieties could establish well when sown to a depth of 70-100mm... But establishment across all sites was reduced by between 17 and 61 per cent with deep sowing, compared to establishment from a sowing depth of 50mm (especially in varieties with short coleoptiles and on loamy soil)... At the North Miling site, establishment was similar for shallow (28mm) and 'normal' (52mm) sowing depths, but deep sowing to a depth of 119mm reduced establishment by between 22 and 45 per cent for a range of wheat varieties...

Increasing row spacing up to 30 centimetres has no effect on wheat yield, when yield potential is less than 3.5 tonnes per hectare... In a dry season, increasing row spacing from 18 to 36 and 54cm resulted in yield penalties in wheat and barley but no difference in water use was recorded with different row spacings... To establish soil nutrient status in systems using wider row spacing a modified approach to soil sampling is suggested...

Schooner and Gairdner have been the preferred malting barley varieties in central NSW, with smaller areas of Baudin and some Fitzroy in the north... At both 77 and 101 mm, Fleet showed the least reduction in emergence, followed by Buloke , Commander and Schooner... Overall, the results emphasise the need to sow varieties that have short coleoptiles at shallow depths and to take care with seed grading and the use of seed dressings...
