Modern farming systems enjoy a greater range of tools to aid in decision making during the growing season... There are a range of products and services to help with in-season decision making: simple historic rainfall and temperature deciles, such as Rainmain or CliMate; seasonal forecasting, such as SOI, IOD and ENSO; short term weather forecasts (a large range of websites and apps available); yield prediction tools and newsletters, such as Yield Prophet, Hart Beat, The Break; and soil moisture probes... Further to the products, growers also have the ability to make variable rate input decisions based on paddock spatial variation through crop sensors mounted on tractors, satellite photos or other images collected from planes or UAVs and drones...

Failure to meet obligations outlined in a grain contract can be costly to a business, so it is important to have systems in place and manage contracts ... The averages should not be seen as reflecting the overall average price achieved for APW by pool operators... The three key considerations when assessing the forecasting accuracy of a given pool operator is the: n difference between the FPR and the average EPR published during the decision period (i.e. how much less/more did growers receive from what they were expecting)...

Farmers see advantages in land values being held down by lower productivity levels in allowing them to expand their businesses.. Five wheat producing businesses were studied across a production transect varying from highly productive land on Yorke Peninsula (average wheat yield 4.5 tonne/Ha) to marginal cereal growing area in a low rainfall district of the Upper North (average yield 1.3 tonne/Ha)... All the businesses studied showed a profitable outcome at average yields (refer Figure 2- only the highest and lowest yielding farms included)...
