Diamondback moth alert for canola crops.. While growers have been focused on the threat posed by green peach aphids, diamondback moth (DBM) also has the potential to cause significant losses in canola this season... Regional movement of DBM and colonisation of canola in southern Australia (University of Adelaide): PhD project to improve the understanding of movement of resistance types within a population to manage resistance, and learn more about timing and sources of colonisation to better predict which seasons will present a risk of DBM damage...

"As we now come out of winter, having had dry weather for much of August and temperatures starting to climb, we're now in circumstances that are again quite favourable for DBM. We're starting to receive agronomist reports that DBM are easy to find in many canola crops from all around South Australia, and I expect there will also be reports in Victoria and southern NSW.".. She said growers could access information about controlling the insect pest by accessing the Grains Research and Development Corporation's (GRDC) Diamondback Moth in Canola Fact Sheet at www.grdc.com.au/GRDC-FS-DiamondbackMothSouthWest "Growers should monitor their canola crops regularly from when flowering starts, especially if conditions are warm and DBM numbers are building up," Ms Micic said... "Other areas of the grainbelt may also have high levels of DBM if there was a 'green bridge' over summer and autumn with a lot of self-sown canola or radish present," she said... "GRDC supported research has shown that if DBM numbers are rising, crops may need at least two sprays, with the thresholds for spraying being about 10 caterpillars in 10 sweeps at the pre-flowering stage; and 50 caterpillars in 10 sweeps at mid-flowering," she said...
