Best estimate climate change scenarios indicate that surface water availability in the Northern Region will decrease over the next 20 years, putting pressure on agricultural water users to increase water productivity... Take home message Changes in technology will mean that growers are likely to be offered greater choice in types of variety allowing much better fine-tuning of sorghum production systems to match local environments... While widespread deployment of GM sorghum is unlikely in the short-term, Australian sorghum growers should get access to non-GM herbicide tolerance traits in the next few years... In the short term, the high starch sorghum preferred by the ethanol industry will also be preferred by the animal industries...
