Table showing the predicted flowering dates in three regions using the Flowering Calculator.. The successful adoption of this strategy hinges on matching variety to sowing time to maximise growth and to minimise the likelihood of frost damage after flowering - and also to minimise the impact of hot weather and terminal drought during grain fill... The Flowering Calculator is a tool that enables an adviser or grower to compare flowering dates relative to the risks of frost and the likelihood of experiencing water stress during grain development...

Strategy: Avoid using Picloram in sorghum crops if double cropping back into chickpeas... In the short term, the decision on row spacing and planter configuration will in most cases be largely determined by the: planting equipment and machinery available at the time current paddock and farm layout tillage practices... Growers must seriously consider planting time, and weigh up the potential yield benefits of early planting against the risk of frost and cold temperatures at flowering...

Take home message Low temperatures and frost caused losses up to 100% in many 2009 chickpea crops Chickpeas won't hold a pod until average daily temperature reaches15C Temperature records in the canopy can explain why flowers and pods abort Plant at the optimum time to maximize WUE and yield and minimise frost damage.. The low temperature effects on chickpea reproduction were exacerbated by frosts on 28 Sep and (in some places) 8 Oct 09... Conclusions Low temperatures and frost caused losses up 100% in many 2009 chickpea crops Chickpeas don't form fertile flowers and keep pods until average daily temperature reaches15C Temperature readings, preferably collected in the canopy, can be used to explain why flowers and pods abort Planting at the optimum time maximises WUE and yield and can minimise frost damage..

Several I & I NSW projects in central western NSW in 2009 aimed to gather data on a number of different wheat varieties that have been quickly adopted as preferred varieties and to compare them to older more well known varieties... To establish some baseline phenology data, a selection of wheat varieties were grown under irrigation and sown at three sowing dates (Figure 1)... Observations recorded 15 August showed marked differences between individual varieties with the effects of plant population having an impact on the rate of crop development as soil moisture was progressively becoming a major limiting factor (Figure 3)...
