Catalogue: GRDC Updates (North)
The potential for epidemic development can be gauged by the amount of disease in the lower canopy... Cereal seed treatments are widely used throughout the Northern Grains Region (NGR) to control or suppress a broad range of diseases... With a range of diseases that are more difficult to control and a grain fill period less predisposed to drought stress there may be more benefit to strobilurins in barley crops rather than wheat, though more work is needed to verify this statement...

Destroy volunteer wheat plants by March, as they can provide a greenbridge for rust carryover... The spores require 15 to 20 C temperature and free moisture (dew/rain/irrigation) on the leaves to successfully infect wheat... Stem rust develops at higher temperatures than the other wheat rusts within a range of 18-30 C. Spores require free moisture (dew, rain or irrigation) and take up to six hours to infect the plant and pustules can be seen after 10-20 days of infection...

Catalogue: Ground Cover
As larvae feed at the nodes, infestation during and after stem elongation can result in weakening of the stems, lodging, and lack of head development and seed-set... The first instar is 0.5 to 1.7mm long and spends 12 to 15 hours crawling down the leaf to the feeding site between the leaf sheath and stem... Look along leaves for eggs and check for maggots or flaxseeds by pulling the leaf sheath away from the stem to the base of the plant...
