soil test level

Catalogue: GRDC Updates
Soil tests measure nutrient supply while plant tests can provide a more accurate indicator of nutrient availability, especially where there may be significant sub soil reserves (K and/or S) and/or the nutrients are only supplied in very small quantities i.e. trace elements... The number is large enough to be representative for WA and to summarise the nutritional status of WA soils... Smart fertiliser decisions will be based on what nutrients are measured in the soil and profitable fertiliser returns depend upon the adequate supply of all plant essential nutrients...

While chickpeas are considered to have moderately high requirement for P, economic fertiliser responses to P are uncommon... The two exceptions are: soils with critically low P levels (below 6-8 mg P/kg, based on a Colwell test at 0-10cm) and no prior history of P fertiliser long fallow situations with low VAM levels (10 months or longer) even where soil levels are considered adequate... Some situations where N fertiliser may warrant consideration include: late plant situations where the crop can flower as quickly as 60 days, and rapid early growth is critical in achieving adequate height and sufficient biomass to support a reasonable grain yield...
