Plan ahead to stop canola stem rot.. Clean or grade any retained canola crop seed from last season that shows signs of sclerotinia - or use new, clean seed... Dr Khangura says use of fungicides will be determined by: disease presence; conditions conducive for disease development (including rainfall and crop biomass levels); maturity of the variety; crop yield potential; and canola prices...

Risk management makes flood an opportunity.. When Luke was photographed by Ground Cover in the first week of March, about 254 millimetres of floodwater had already soaked into the soil profile, allowing him to revise upwards his wheat and chickpea yield expectations... Twin-sowing lucerne with wheat is another strategy that helps the Arbuckles to avoid having to apply nitrogen to subsequent crops for at least a season...

National canola Sclerotinia surveys have found stem infection levels above 60 per cent in some paddocks in conducive seasons... "But the disease is highly weather sensitive and the crop response will change each year, depending on how the season unfolds - particularly in relation to spring rainfall and timing of spore release," she said... Remotely sensed data from satellite, drones or real time NDVI sensors might allow growers to measure crop biomass and vary fungicidal applications ...

Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) plant pathologist Ravjit Khangura said sclerotinia had recently appeared in canola crops in locations including Esperance and Frankland River... Dr Khangura said research funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) had shown that fungicides applied to canola crops at the 20 to 30 per cent flowering stage were usually most effective in reducing yield losses caused by sclerotinia... "Spores released from the fungal fruiting bodies (apothecia) initially infect canola petals, which subsequently drop into the plant canopy and can lead to leaf and stem lesions which cause lodging and yield loss," she said...

Modelling gives crop yield picture.. Western Australian growers can get an idea of the yield potential of their crops by going online to access soil moisture and Yield Prophet information for a range of sites in the grainbelt... Under a project initiated by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Regional Cropping Solutions Network (RCSN) initiative, 26 soil moisture probes have been installed at a range of sites in the Kwinana, Albany and Esperance port zones...

When first shifting to variable rate inputs, start with those that are not time-critical such as applying lime, gypsum or top-dressed nitrogen or potassium... In-paddock variation can be measured and mapped at harvest and during the growing season while crops are growing... But more detailed and accurate zones are produced using statistical software packages that combine different layers of spatial data (such as yield and EMI maps, see Figure 2)...
