nitrogen deficiency

Western Australian grain growers may need to consider adjusting 2014 nitrogen fertiliser strategies due to the influence of high stubble loads and a dry summer and autumn on plant available nitrogen in the soil... Mr Ryan suggested growers use these results and assess stubble loads to determine if additional fertiliser was required, and consider adjusting their nitrogen application method at seeding time or using split (separate) nitrogen applications which could decrease any risk of low nitrogen availability... "Knowing your current soil nitrogen status; stubble density; stubble quality (including the amount of nitrogen relative to carbon); and soil moisture content can help you manage fertiliser applications and rates to ensure that adequate nitrogen is supplied to the crop," he said...

Maximise yield with protein knowledge.. Protein testing grain sorghum at harvest should be routine practice if growers want to maximise the profitability of their crops... According to the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), grain sorghum protein levels (at 13.5 percent moisture) of less than 9pc indicates acute nitrogen deficiency, 9-10pc indicates marginal nitrogen deficiency while levels above 10pc suggest that nitrogen is adequate and not adversely impacting yield...

Use of liquid dichlorvos to control insects in stored cereal grain has been restricted this harvest because of changes to registrations of products containing dichlorvos... Under the new permit, the chemical can only be used for treating grain pests if it is supplied in packaging with a dry break (micromatic) coupler closed delivery system... Grain storage expert Peter Botta says it is illegal for growers to use dichlorvos products supplied without the dry break coupler because it is contrary to the permit conditions in place, which are designed to manage risks of exposure to workers...

Old leaves develop elongated grey to dark brown spots on or near the edges of the leaf, usually half way along the leaf quickly spreading towards the tip and base... Description Old leaves turn pale green and bronze-yellow areas develop in the mid-section of the leaf between the edge and mid-vein; these areas quickly extend towards the leaf tip until the top two-thirds of the leaf is bronze-yellow (orange-red in some varieties)... Old leaves become dull green and bronze-orange areas develop between the edge and mid-vein at the base of the leaf...

Five strategies to manage nitrogen deficiency in Central Queensland.. Mr Conway says that due to the flooding in recent years, growers are being encouraged to introduce more grain legumes into their rotations to put nitrogen back into the soil... Growers are encouraged to talk to their local agronomists about smart fertilising programs, and to consult the GRDC handbook Managing legume and fertiliser N for northern grains cropping : www.grdc.com.au/GRDC-Booklet-ManagingFertiliserN..

Soils should be tested every 3-5 years as part of a nutrient-monitoring programme... Applying phosphate fertiliser can induce zinc deficiency either by interference with zinc uptake or by relative dilution of zinc concentration in the plant by the large increase in production caused by phosphate application... Zinc is a vital element to the plant and should not be overlooked in a balanced crop nutrition program...
