Bean leaf roll virus (BLRV) emerged for the first time in irrigated faba bean crops in the Murray Valley in 2006, prompting moves this year by Pulse Australia to ensure growers are well informed about the preventive measures they can take... Pulse Australia's south-east development officer Trevor Bray says the main issue that frustrates growers and advisers is that, once a crop is infected, the disease is not curable: "In this case, there is no miracle cure in a drum.".. "Seasons like last year, with warm, dry conditions and a green bridge of irrigated pastures combined with early aphid activity, low rainfall and limited irrigations possibly stressing pastures, led to early aphid flights to neighbouring crops in search of food," Mr Bray says...

Long-term tillage and rotation trials conducted by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries have shown that through the adoption of best management practice (BMP) and breaking cereal monocultures by allocating 15-20% of winter cropping area to chickpeas, leading growers in Queensland and New South Wales have seen an average increase of 1 t/ha in yield and 1% in grain protein content in their following wheat crops... Pulse industry mourns John Slatter.. Presenting the award, GRDC Northern Panel chairman Ian Buss said he agreed with the view that, through his tireless promotion of pulses in rotations, John Slatter had probably done more for the uptake of good agronomy in the northern region than any other individual. ".. Similarly Brondwen MacLean, the GRDC"s manager for pulse and oilseed breeding, said grains industry people who knew John Slatter would support the argument that his rejection of political correctness - and his willingness to "ruffle a few feathers" for the good of the cause - were major factors in his successes for Pulse Australia...
