Just released trial results have confirmed the efficacy of the Harrington Seed Destructor (HSD) in reducing annual ryegrass emergence, paving the way for its introduction into Australian farming systems... The HSD has been developed by farmer and inventor Ray Harrington with support from the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (AHRI), based at The University of Western Australia, and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)... Dr Walsh said that while the trials focussed on ryegrass because it was the most problematic weed in Australian cropping, the HSD was also equally effective in controlling other weed seeds including wild radish, wild oat and brome grass...

You typically find that the depth to the salt bulge decreases to the west... We have concluded that chickpeas were not as effective as wheat in adjusting yield components under prolonged water stress... The grain yield in the SF early burn and cultivated treatment (2.5 t/ha) was comparable to the other SF treatments in the dry 2002 season despite having the lowest incidence of crown rot infection...

Yield losses in crops affected by bare patches can be over 50% and crops with uneven growth (Figure 1) may lose up to 20%... Figure 1: Above-ground symptoms of crop unevenness (main picture) are seen when Rhizoctonia damages crown roots, even when seminal roots (inset) escape the infection... Inoculum levels increase in cereal crops at all depths...

Important economic diseases occurring in Queensland include seedling diseases ( Rhizoctonia and Pythium species), alternaria, black root rot, boll rots, bacterial blight, verticillium wilt and fusarium wilt... Grow only resistant varieties where diseases are known to occur, and closely adhere to planting guidelines to ensure a vigorous seedling... Hygiene measures include: ensuring machinery and vehicles that enter or leave the farm are free of dirt and crop debris keeping irrigation tailwater and run-off water on the farm controlling weeds within and around fields using a crop rotation strategy maintaining good soil nutrition levels minimising spillage and loss when transporting modules, hulls, cotton seed or gin trash...
