The adoption of a production system where only crops have to be managed, can be rationalised on the basis that a manager is likely to perform better in an area in which he or she specialises and prefers... Managers need to focus on the unit Cost of Production (before interest), or Break Even Price (after interest), to ensure that there is sufficient margin between these figures and their expected returns... It is appropriate that when a property is purchased, a qualified assessor be engaged to provide a depreciation and capital works report...

New wheat changes weed management options.. James Clark, Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) northern panel chair said Elmore CL Plus , a new Clearfield wheat released by Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) gives growers another tool to combat problem weeds... "There is a discount in moving from a prime hard to hard variety but it may be worth it for the opportunity to reset the system, control weeds and use residual chemicals in the fallow, a practice that would normally lock growers out of wheat that year," he said...

The adoption of no-till in WA is widespread with approximately 86% of growers using no-till for a proportion of their cropping (D' Emden and Llewellyn, 2004)... No-till crop production systems have major benefits for growers in Australia, such as timeliness of operations, moisture harvesting, erosion control and higher yields... Research in Western Australia shows oat cover crops can drive down the weed population but not as effectively as a pasture phase of sown or volunteer barley...

The program of research developed around this position focuses on novel approaches to grain crop improvement in water-limited environments... It emphasises the design and testing of crop production systems that optimise combinations of genetic attributes (G) and agronomic management (M) in variable water-limited environments (E) using a systems analysis and modelling approach... The ways genes, environments and management systems interact to affect crop productivity has been captured in mathematical algorithms that turn computers into virtual paddocks, allowing simulated field trials to improve risk-management options and resource-use efficiency < Keep browsing..

Return on brown manure crop equal to continuous cropping Data collected from 2009 to 2011 suggests a crop production system comprising a rotation of brown manure field peas, canola and wheat, can be as profitable as continuous cropping... Rob Patterson, of Rural Management Strategies, Cootamundra, NSW, shared these findings at last week's Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Adviser Update held at Narrandera, NSW. "A crop sequence of brown manure field peas followed by canola and two wheat crops can be as profitable at current commodity prices as continuous cropping, or mixed farming involving cropping and Merino sheep," Mr Patterson said... "A crop production system involving brown manure field peas has less production and financial risk compared to continuous cropping, due to lower input and operating costs."..

Gross margins achieved on-farm for wheat in 2011 may have been lower than shown in Table 2... The gross margin calculations depicted in Figure 5 assumed that canola yielded 50 % of wheat at that site in that year... In comparing while many farm decisions are made intuitive versus logical analytical under the influence of a DSS which provide learning reasoning he suggests the either/or approach to on a topic, they are not necessarily used every time the dichotomies is destructive and goes on to say a decision is made...
