The work showed that Touchdown Broadacre Tm (TD- BA) offered ~96% control but another formulation of a Group M herbicide at comparable use rates only controlled 10% at 52 days after application (DAA)... A group M herbicide @ 2lt/ha followed by a double knock of Sprayseed Tm offered moderate improvement in control (61% control @ 52 DAA)... The summary of the results of this trial is shown in Graph 1 below...

Soil testing can be used to assess the likely nutrient constraints, but soil testing and soil test interpretation is not a precise science... To summarise a number of trial results, some sites had consistent increases in crop growth for crop-after-crop; others were more hit-and-miss... Nutrient rates used are 40 kg P (MAP or a fluid source), 200 kg K (SOP or MOP), and 40-80 kg S (SOA or ATS), with the high application rates designed to allow impacts to be followed through an extended crop rotation...

During presentations at the recent round of Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grains Research Updates, CSIRO senior farming systems scientist Dr Lindsay Bell said significant opportunities existed to improve the efficiency of farming systems with only 29% of surveyed crop sequences achieving 80% of their potential water use efficiency... He said farming systems were also under mounting pressure from herbicide resistance, declining soil fertility and increasing soil-borne pathogens, requiring effective responses within the farming system to maintain productivity... Assessing the performance of this year's winter crop can offer enormous insight into the success, or failure, of disease, pest and weed management programs and those lessons can benefit the farming system for years to come...

Maximise yield with protein knowledge.. Protein testing grain sorghum at harvest should be routine practice if growers want to maximise the profitability of their crops... According to the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), grain sorghum protein levels (at 13.5 percent moisture) of less than 9pc indicates acute nitrogen deficiency, 9-10pc indicates marginal nitrogen deficiency while levels above 10pc suggest that nitrogen is adequate and not adversely impacting yield...
