The RCSNs - comprising growers and industry professionals in each port zone - have also invested limited discretionary GRDC funds into 'fast-tracked', short-term projects to address pressing crop production constraints facing local growers... Growers may be interested to know that the GRDC has increased its investment in WA RCSN projects to $750,000 this year... The GRDC looks forward to extending the results from these and other 2014 RCSN projects when they become available...

Author : Sharon Watt GRDC South Regional Panel member Jon Midwood says the Skipton Update will offer local growers the opportunity to hear from a range of industry experts who will deliver information on the latest outcomes from industry research efforts... Market analyst Andrew Whitelaw, from Mercado, will provide context for the event by presenting an overview of the markets for grain produced in the region and the likely triggers for any changes in global supply and demand... Michael Nash from SARDI will provide an overview on the status of the newly identified pest, Russian Wheat Aphid, the recommended management options available to growers and the role of beneficial insects in keeping aphid populations in check...

The innovative website, www.soilquality.org.au , will enable growers to compare the condition of their soils with that of their regional farming counterparts... The SA node of the interactive website will be launched later this month at a soil quality workshop at Clare where growers, consultants and advisers will gather to put Mid North soils under the microscope... Program (SCaRP) which is managed by CSIRO and funded by GRDC and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), more than 100 SA farm soils (half of which were in the Mid North) have been sampled and analysed for carbon stocks, as well as a range of other chemical, physical and biological indicators of soil health...

Recent Grains Research and Development Corporation-funded (GRDC) research in the northern region shows native remnant vegetation measures around three per cent soil organic carbon (OC) in the top 10 centimetres of the soil... Soil that has been cropped long term is about 1% OC, which indicates long term cropping has decreased OC by 2%.This is a massive drop in the real value of land... A 2% decrease equates to at least 20 tonnes per hectare of OC lost from the soil (assuming bulk density of only 1.0)...

WA growers can save by cutting phosphorus rates.. Western Australian grain growers can make significant cost savings by reducing phosphorus application to 'maintenance rates', and using soil test results to fine-tune them... "Researchers need to determine the 'maintenance rates' required for different soils and regions of WA so reliable maintenance recommendations can be made for growers," Dr Wong said...

A good program will look to at least maintain fertility and this goes closely with soil physical and biological health... Put tests strips in place, monitor paddock fertility and grain nutrient levels in the short and long term, and keep accurate records of the complete costs of strategies used and the data used to make the 2011 decisions...

"It is important that we take what we now know out to the farming community so growers can gain a better understanding of how soils respond to management practices.".. The GRDC has established the Soil Biology Initiative to explore what is seen as the "last frontier" for the grains industry, "The arrival and rapid development of new technologies now means we are finally in a position to delve deep into the soil biological communities and see not only who is there but what they are doing, not only as individual species but as highly interactive communities," Assoc Prof Mele said... Knowledge and understanding generated through the Soil Biology Initiative's extensive suite of research projects is expected to lead to recommendations on how growers can best manage soils to maximise nutrient capture and defend against disease, resulting in less reliance on chemical controls and reduced inputs...
