Eyes on the market as season unfolds.. We sowed our canola, oats and barley deep - 18 centimetres, with around 8cm of soil over the seed in the furrow - to chase moisture... As a first-time dry sower, we decided to sow barley, wheat and brown manure vetch, as we considered these to be lower risk in a false-break scenario, and they can still be managed with a staggered germination...

Validations on plot trials produced an R 2 of 0.97 between simulated and measured plant N (g N m -2 )... Fitzgerald et al. 2010 reported a correlation with an R 2 = 0.97 between predicted and measured total plant N (g N m -2 ) based on relating the CCCI to the Canopy Nitrogen Index (CNI) - an index that relates biomass to plant N. This relationship was validated with additional plot level data from Australia and Italy, resulting in an R 2 of 0.97 of predicted with measured plant N (g N m -2 ) and an RMSE of 0.2 g N m -2 as reported in Cammarano et al. 2011b... In the short term, there is a need for a workshop to fully identify the knowledge gaps, and develop a plan for research leading to new capabilities and deliverables to growers and consultants...

The region's grains advisers will go back to school in August at insect pest workshops supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)... The one-day workshop is a new initiative and aims to help advisers explore more effective and sustainable strategies for managing insect pests in summer and winter grain crops... Dow AgroSciences and Syngenta have provided additional support for the workshops which will take place at Dalby, Queensland on 13 August and Moree, NSW on 15 August...

If there is a history of sclerotinia stem rot in your district causing yield loss, be prepared to use a foliar fungicide to reduce yield loss... Research will be conducted to investigate this issue in 2014... We can use the fungal life traits to manipulate the fungal population, by changing cultivars with different sources of resistance, the selection pressure on the fungal population is constantly changing...

If fungicides are required, make sure they are applied in the early stages of the epidemic... Spot form of net blotch (SFNB) was the dominant foliar disease of barley, causing yield and quality losses where susceptible varieties were grown in infected stubble and left untreated... In addition to mixing or rotation of fungicides an integrated approach to disease control that includes crop rotation and avoidance of susceptible cultivars will reduce inoculum loads, and reduce the likelihood of resistance to fungicides developing...

Changes in Septoria tritici blotch resistance to fungicides have been detected in the southern grain growing region, especially where wheat is sown into wheat stubble... Two gene mutations in STB detected by NSW Department of Primary Industries indicate resistance to some fungicides (see Case Study)... Currently none of the products with an azole/strobilurin combination in Australia used on wheat are registered for use on STB...
