By Barry Mudge Rural Solutions SA and Anthony Whitbread Upper North Farming Systems, Jamestown, SA.. There is now a fundamental shift towards the need to manage risk better in our farming systems... When comparing the modelled median crop yields against two levels of PAW and seeding opportunity at two different sites and soil types in the Upper North of SA, results show that modelled wheat yields were strongly related to the levels of PAW at seeding and the timing of the seeding opportunity...

Communication with growers and advisers to develop and extend farming systems research was enhanced while excellent grower attendances helped maintain strong interest in the Hart Fieldsite... In characterising the APSIM model for the Mid North of South Australia and working actively with growers and the Yield Prophet interface, it became apparent that although this technology is of great benefit, it is highly unlikely that growers will implement it individually...

Nitrogen management also needs to be right, soil needs to be tested and rates applied ...
