Influence of fungicide rate (mean of fungicide products - four site mean) Stem rust control assessed over the four trial sites revealed that using high rates was essential for the control of the disease, even if the fungicide had been applied prophylactically (before infection was visible in the crop)... Influence of cultivar resistance and fungicide application (Prosaro ) on yield and stem rust severity measured on the flag sheath 18 days after fungicide application at early dough (GS82) and assessed at mid dough - physiological maturity (GS85-90) - Bairnsdale, Gippsland, Victoria, 2010... The yield potential for the crop with no nitrogen applied is estimated at GS30 from the results of numerous of trials conducted in that region where NDVI at GS30 is divided by the number of growing degree days (GDD) greater than 0 C since planting, referred to as the INSEY units (in season estimate of yield)...

To help answer this question and determine optimum crop management for crop grazing, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is funding trials in frost-prone areas of Western Australia's Great Southern region... A site to assess crop grazing versus ungrazed crops at Newdegate;.. Region West, National, North, South < Keep browsing 0 Responses to Great Southern trials probe frost, crop grazing..

Early lock-up enables a crop sufficient time to achieve biomass levels at flowering to fully recover grain yield but lower residual biomass at lock-up can reduce crop recovery during a sensitive window around or shortly after GS30 in cereals and bud visible in canola... We believe there is a 'sensitive' window when the crop may still be grazed but sufficient residual biomass is required to allow the crop to reach its critical biomass or leaf area to achieve potential grain yields... We firstly present some results form an experiment conducted at Greenethorpe, NSW in 2013 where a range of mechanical defoliation intensities (hard cut - 5 cm, moderate cut - 8 cm and 'clip' cutting - removing leaves) and lock-up timings were imposed to explore their impact on yield recovery in a winter and spring wheat and canola...

The project has shown that: grazing does not increase the spread of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) in wheat crops... In summary, grazing at 67.3 dry sheep equivalents (DSE)/ha for 31 days or at 33.7 DSE/ha for 62 days significantly reduced canopy leaf area index but also resulted in significantly increased photosynthetic rates post-grazing in young, fully expanded leaves... In summary, results showed that the fraction of incident light intercepted by grazed crops was reduced to only 10-20% compared with 95% in ungrazed crop...

Producers can increase net returns in dual-purpose crops by up to $500 a hectare and achieve other benefits including weed control through careful grazing management... While producers must obviously weigh up the economics of using dual-purpose crops for their forage or grain value, trial work funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and undertaken by CSIRO Agriculture has identified ways of optimising grain yield and grazing potential... "If producers are grazing beyond stem elongation, they should manage stock to protect developing reproductive structures and leave more residual biomass to avoid a yield penalty," Dr Sprague said...
