The results of the experiments have given Jeff the confidence to realise that he does have a viable, cost-effective alternative knockdown herbicide to glyphosate... Double knockdown (T 2.2b, page 128) Weather permitting, a double knockdown is implemented on resistant ryegrass paddocks prior to sowing using two non-selective herbicides (glyphosate followed by paraquat + diquat or paraquat, the choice being dependent upon the range of weeds present)... Helpful advice The Grays still enjoy the challenges and can see that they have made enough progress to feel they are being successful in managing a serious annual ryegrass problem...

While a cereal crop can shade broadleaf weeds, the weeds will still move their leaves to get the maximum benefit from any sunlight reaching them through the crop canopy... Crops sown in an east-west orientation are less successful in suppressing the growth of broadleaf weeds compared with grass weeds... Crop orientation will have a greater impact on farms in southern Australia, compared to northern Australia...

KEYMESSAGES Using glyphosate as an inter-row annual ryegrass control results in faster development of ryegrass resistance than when glyphosate is applied annually as a pre-sow knockdown... Resistance may occur faster than this model suggests... It is clear that many WA farmers are unknowingly introducing weed seed and herbicide resistance into their paddocks during the crop seeding process...

AHRI researcher Mechelle Owen said that although other studies had already found evidence of a correlation between dormancy and resistance in annual ryegrass, the AHRI research was the first large scale study to demonstrate the link... "For each population, initial dormancy and change in dormancy over a six-month period were measured, and the resistance status of seedlings to four herbicides was assessed," Ms Owen said... "Intensive cropping programs are likely to select for increased dormancy when knockdown herbicides kill off the proportion of seed which is able to germinate with the opening rains, leaving the more dormant proportion of the population to germinate later in the season, usually in the crop," she said...

Weed Seed Wizard can investigate the impact of a wide range of management strategies (such as grazing, harvest seed control, increased crop competition, rotation change and various seed set controls such as crop topping and hay making) on the seed and weed numbers of annual ryegrass, wild radish, wild oats, barley grass and brome grass...

Professor Powles told participants that glyphosate is still working well on the majority of WA farms, but stressed that growers and advisers need to diversify its use with other herbicide modes of action and non-herbicide weed-control tactics to preserve its effectiveness in the long term... Random surveys of WA grainbelt paddocks by AHRI researcher Mechelle Owen in 2010 found seven per cent of 362 annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) samples had glyphosate resistance... In 2013, as part of a glyphosate, paraquat (Group L) and 2,4-D (Group I) resistance project, Department of Agriculture and Food, WA (DAFWA) senior research officer Dr Sally Peltzer coordinated a targeted pre-harvest survey across WA's cropping areas to raise awareness about the spread of glyphosate resistance in the state...
