Abstract: Field experiments were conducted at Warooka and Rudall on the Yorke and Eyre Peninsula of South Australia during the 2004 and 2005 growing seasons to investigate the effectiveness of metribuzin for the selective control of rigid brome in no-till sown barley (Hordeum vulgare)... Incorporated by sowing (IBS) metribuzin (202.5 to 270 g ai/ha) was more effective in controlling rigid brome (>75%) than the same herbicide dose applied postemergence (POST)... Although metribuzin at the highest rate (270 g ai/ha) provided superior weed control, it was more phytotoxic to barley, reducing its plant density by 23% relative to the untreated control at Rudall which had a soil with low clay and organic matter content...

Moddus Evo was assessed for reduction of lodging in wheat at a range of rates and at different timings (Figure 1)... A range of rates of Moddus Evo were assessed for reduction of lodging and enhancement of yield in barley (Figures 2a and b)... Conversely during the course of the evaluation of Moddus Evo on the yield enhancement and reduction in lodging there were a few trials with anomalous results, where Moddus Evo application did not improve yield...

Stripe rust has emerged as an important regional disease in northern NSW and southern Qld in the last 5 years primarily due to more virulent pathotypes and an increase in the number of susceptible wheat varieties grown... Included in the trial were 6 different fungicides with nearly all at the low and high label rates... Table 3 highlights the improvement in economics when the fungicide can be applied with another planned operation...

4. Desiccate late season weeds Desiccating the crop too early can result in greater lodging particularly if harvest is then delayed, and may impact on both grain yield and quality... Sorghum growers and advisers in Qld have appeared more comfortable with optimal timing of sorghum spray-out, largely based on grain black layer (abscission zone) development... There was no impact on yield or grain quality from any timing...
