The project has provided technological support to improve sprouting resistance in wheat by Australian wheat breeders by annual phenotyping of advanced breeding lines, development of improved screening technologies including molecular markers, and germplasm with improved sprouting resistance based on grain dormancy... Given that grain dormancy is a difficult trait to manipulate due to interactions with both maturity and the environment, molecular markers tightly linked to the major QTLs are a high priority... Results from dormant x non-dormant crosses and reciprocal crosses indicate that 2-3 QTLs or genes are involved in dormancy in white-grained as well as red-grained wheat genotypes whilst the patterns of phenotype expression are consistent with a model involving an interaction between an embryo factor (sensitivity to abscisic acid (ABA) that declines during after-ripening, most probably the 4A QTL) and at least one other factor that is expressed in the seed coat...

Western Australian research is fine-tuning sprouting tolerance ratings for wheat, to help growers identify varieties less likely to sprout during wet conditions at the end of the cropping season... Research into pre-harvest sprouting has been conducted over recent years by the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA), with funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), as part of the project 'Wheat agronomy - building system profitability in the western region'... Simulated summer showers are providing new information about varietal factors that contribute to sprouting resistance... "EGA Eagle Rock is a good example of a variety that has only average resistance to sprouting, based on the germination index, but which consistently maintains grain quality despite harvest rainfall... Figure 2 shows the falling number of the wheat varieties EGA Eagle Rock (the current commercial variety with the highest resistance), Westonia (sprouting susceptible), Mace (the most widely grown variety in Western Australia) and one of Dr Daryl Mares intermediate resistant breeding lines, DM167, for a range of simulated rain treatments...
