Many decisions to manage crop establishment pests should be made well before sowing when there are far more control options available... Extremely high levels of resistance to several synthetic pyrethroids (> 200,000 fold in the case of bifenthrin) were detected using laboratory bioassays, and this has translated to significant yield losses in the field... Further properties with insecticide resistance have been detected since 2010, although at this stage, resistance has not been detected outside of WA. Experts predict resistance in RLEM will spread to other states, including to Victoria...

Optimising water use efficiency in western NSW.. The relative merit of different rotation crops can also be assessed by looking at the amount of water they extract from the soil profile... Research has shown that canola is better able to extract phosphorus (P) from soil than wheat (Bolland and Brennan 2008) meaning that maximum yield of canola can be achieved with lower P application than is required for wheat...

Mice on the move in CQ - plan ahead and protect summer crops.. Thankfully mouse populations have not reached levels which pose a significant threat to yield during the current harvest, but a number of growers from the Central Highlands, Arcadia, and Callide-Dawson Valleys are reporting rising numbers around their farms... Remember that mice are vermin and can carry disease; gloves should be worn when handling mice and appropriate occupational health and safety procedures, including protective clothing, should be adhered to when handling poisons...

KEYMESSAGES Using glyphosate as an inter-row annual ryegrass control results in faster development of ryegrass resistance than when glyphosate is applied annually as a pre-sow knockdown... Resistance may occur faster than this model suggests... It is clear that many WA farmers are unknowingly introducing weed seed and herbicide resistance into their paddocks during the crop seeding process...

Over the past two decades, feathertop rhodes grass has gone from being a minor cropping weed to a major problem for northern - and now some southern - growers... The only way to control fTr effectively is to use an integrated weed management (iWM) approach... The efficacy of herbicides against fTr drops rapidly when plants are larger than the early tillering stage or are moisture stressed, so spray as soon as possible after rain for best results...

Michael Widderick, Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) says seed banks need to be reduced to decrease weed pressures and the key is stopping seed set... Dr Widderick says for many small-seeded weeds, such as feathertop Rhodes grass and fleabane, the seed bank is relatively short lived (one to two years), so a concerted effort for a short period of time will enable growers to quickly get on top of troublesome weeds... Dr Widderick says fleabane is a difficult to control weed and an over-reliance on glyphosate for fallow weed control has resulted in populations becoming glyphosate resistant...
