Growers need not use high rates of clay or expensive incorporation methods when claying non-wetting soils to improve yields, new Western Australian research suggests... Dr Davies said that in the latest trials, wheat yields improved by at least 0.2t/ha when growing season rainfall was at least 300mm and low rates of clay were incorporated to a shallow depth at sites including Meckering, Bolgart, Badgingarra, Binnu and Balla... Dr Davies said when moderate (150-300t/ha of clay-rich subsoil) and high rates of clay (300t/ha or more of clay-rich subsoil) were incorporated to a shallow depth, there was little additional yield advantage when compared to the lower clay rates...

The 2006 season was not favourable for virus development and luteovirus symptoms developed relatively late, but a substantial yield benefit (> 10%) was measured after imidacloprid seed treatment... Outcomes of the project were expected to provide an indication whether a limited number of practical interventions by growers were possible and were an economical way to control virus diseases in faba beans... The outcome of the project clearly indicates that faba beans can be cultivated in BLRV prone regions of northern Australia, either by using BLRV resistant cultivars or by using imidacloprid seed treatment with relatively low rates...

The drier seasons of the past decade (Section 3) would not favour these two diseases and is the likely cause of their reduction in importance...
