Over the next year, new research will provide Western Australian growers with information to compare the cost effectiveness of purchasing different information layers for variable rate technology (VRT) zone application maps... In addition to a comprehensive literature review, knowledge and experiences from growers, agronomists and precision agriculture practitioners about the benefits and drawbacks of each information layer will be incorporated into the study... "With seeding well underway in the west, decision making about the cost effectiveness of purchasing different map layers for variable rate technology (VRT) zone application will be top of mind for many growers," Mr White said...

The investigation has revealed that there exists a lack of information in Australia relating to the use of organic by-products as fertilisers and soil ameliorants in its cropping systems... While research has been conducted using piggery, chicken, cattle manures and biosolids, it has only been very short term and mostly at rates designed to show an effect within the short time- frame of funding rather than at application rates growers can reasonably be expected to use... At the locations, the application of different forms of by-product at different rates and levels of soil incorporation would be assessed for impacts on yield and soil quality over five seasons...

Messages obtained from farmers in a GRDC supported study on 27 farms in the Wallatin and O'Brien catchments 200 kilometres east of Perth are relevant to a large portion of WA's wheatbelt... The study recommended demonstration approaches to salinity management to enable farmers to draw objective conclusions about cost-effectiveness and critical success factors... The study concluded that CDI-type approaches can overcome knowledge constraints in managing salinity by fostering social learning, offering a structured process of trialling options so costs and benefits can be identified and avoiding past costly mistakes and "learning failures"...
