Growers that have the weed seed bank under control will save herbicide costs; be able to use diverse tactics that would otherwise be cost prohibitive; and, by reducing the frequency of herbicide applications, will delay the onset of herbicide resistance... With any discussion on managing resistance we need to start with the basics and understand why we have the problem in the first place... Registration of high application rates by this technique may allow the control of resistant weeds that have survived a preceding application of a different mode of action...

A near-perfect start with good summer and autumn rain coupled with mild temperatures saw crops jump out of the ground... Insect pests including green peach aphid (GPA) and the resulting beet western yellows virus (BWYV or synonym, turnip yellows virus) and diamondback moth (DBM) both proved headaches for growers at different stages of the growing season... Mr Baker says the colonisation of DBM in canola crops this year looks to be at a lower level for much the same reason as the risk of GPA and BWYV is this year - a much drier summer and early autumn than last year and less of a green bridge on which to survive...

Wild radish joins the glyphosate resistance club.. GRDC-sponsored PhD student Mike Ashworth, at the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative, has uncovered glyphosate resistance in wild radish... Our surveys have shown that WCMs are typically found wherever wheat is grown... The distribution of balaustium and bryobia mites has been completed throughout southern Australia (WA, SA, Vic and NSW)... The results suggest that omethoate and chlorpyrifos will be the most effective broad-spectrum pesticides for control of bryobia mites, although problems are likely to occur for other registered pesticides...
