Messages obtained from farmers in a GRDC supported study on 27 farms in the Wallatin and O'Brien catchments 200 kilometres east of Perth are relevant to a large portion of WA's wheatbelt... The study recommended demonstration approaches to salinity management to enable farmers to draw objective conclusions about cost-effectiveness and critical success factors... The study concluded that CDI-type approaches can overcome knowledge constraints in managing salinity by fostering social learning, offering a structured process of trialling options so costs and benefits can be identified and avoiding past costly mistakes and "learning failures"...

Where dryland salinity threatens the productivity of agricultural land there is a need for farmers to formulate considered responses... From the areas identified by farmers we noticed that mid and upper slope farmers have just as much area of concern (often brackish hillside seeps) and recent outbreaks on their farms as valley floor farmers... There is a need for farmers and catchment groups to invest greater effort in risk assessment and to link the need to know to the risk at given sites...

The study set out to understand the existing constraints on the capacity to manage salinity... While recent dry seasons have meant that salinity has "gone off the boil" somewhat as an issue in Western Australia, our analysis shows that the area of saline land continues to increase on farm at the expense of farm profits and degradation of natural resources... Outcomes from the project apply to approximately 2 million hectares of low to medium rainfall mixed farming land in the WA wheatbelt along with other areas in Australia with similarities in groundwater flow systems, area of saline land, farming systems and productivity levels...
