We conducted 56 replicated plot experiments on a range of integrated disease management (IDM) strategies under this project aimed at reducing losses and refining management of these diseases... Three replicated trials were conducted in 2007 with 24 different treatments evaluated for the control of CR in both a bread wheat and durum variety... In collaboration with CAS, we tested stubble samples from 312 paddocks in northern NSW for levels of CR and CRR during this project...

NGA have been involved in 22 field trials since 2007, in collaboration with Steven Simpfendorfer I&I NSW, evaluating the impact of crown rot (CR) on a range of winter cereal crop types and varieties... During 2007 & 2008 a common series of 5 bread wheat varieties, 4 barley varieties and 1 durum were evaluated in all 18 trials... 2. Less apparent range in variety Pt tolerance than seen for bread wheat Figure 5 shows the variety yield performance compared to EGA Wylie for all varieties evaluated in both 2008 and 2009...

Until such varieties are released, northern growers and advisers need to select varieties firstly on the basis of crown rot risk and then manage for stripe rust ... There is a risk of WSMV being spread through infected seed into new areas... We have not been able to determine an economic threshold for RGB in sorghum from these trials...

" Date: 11.07.2008 THE IMPACT OF CROWN ROT ON WINTER CEREAL YIELDS.. Trials were assessed for plant establishment and harvested by small plot headers to attain grain yield and quality... Screenings results did show a much larger impact from the addition of crown rot...

Although the trials were not designed to focus on nematodes, a convincing trend was apparent after 2008 that indicated the root lesion nematode Pratylenchus thornei (Pt) was having a frequent and large impact on wheat variety yield... During 2007 & 2008 a common series of 5 bread wheat varieties, 4 barley varieties and 1 durum were evaluated in all 18 trials (NB only 17 yield results are presented as barley varieties were heavily damaged by emus at 1 site in 2008)... 2. Ten trials had no Pt detected with 7 sites having Pt present ( Pt were present at 5 of 10 sites in 2007 and 2 of 7 sites in 2008, PreDicta B Pt levels ranged from 1000-7000/kg soil in 2007 and 4000-5000/kg soil in 2008)... 2. " Date: 17.09.2009 THE IMPACT OF CROWN ROT ON WINTER CEREAL YIELDS - YEAR 2 Figure 2... The key comparison was that all varieties were evaluated with and without added crown rot at sites where crown rot was expected to be at low natural levels... Sunco has been the benchmark variety for crown rot resistance for many years BOTH with or without added crown rot NOT indicate all four varieties are more resistant or tolerant to crown rot than Sunco but rather that the differences in tolerance measured have been small and outweighed by inherent variety yield eg under high loss situations in 2007, EGA Gregory lost a higher % yield to crown rot than the other varieties but still recorded the second highest final yields in the presence of added crown rot..

Excessive application of N may increase susceptibility of the crop to disease and increase water use early in the growing season whereas insufficient application may limit grain yield, grain protein and subsequent profitability... As part of the GRDC funded VSAP project, five nitrogen use efficiency trials were conducted in 2011 at Trangie, Condobolin, Parkes, Coonamble and Spring Ridge, as well as a sowing time trial at Trangie, with these trials used in this paper to assess the grain yield and grain protein concentration of several commercial wheat varieties... N application increased the protein of all the varieties, with protein increases being recorded up to 160 kg/ha of applied N...
