common root rot

Catalogue: GRDC Publications
Overall, barley diseases have the potential to cause very significant costs for farmers... Incidence is 30 per_cent frequency in 30 per_cent of the area, so that the average incidence of the disease affecting the crop is 9 per_cent... Overall, breeding contributes more than 25 per cent of the control for 14 diseases, cultural methods for 32 diseases, and pesticides for six barley diseases...

The capacity of the plant to take up potassium is not directly related to potassium in solution... Spraying is best done when there is some wind, and when the operator can be sure that wind direction has stabilised... Driftability of amine formulations The 2,4- D products Surpass and Amicide 625 which were used in the trial are considered to be nonvolatile any drift that is associated with these products will be droplet drift not vapour drift...

Inter-row sowing can slow crown rot build-up.. Dr Simpfendorfer says the results showed that sowing between the previous cereal rows reduced the incidence of plants infected with the crown rot pathogen F. pseudograminearum by 45 per cent and the severity of disease by 51 per cent across sites and various winter cereals ( Figure 1 )... Although inter-row sowing reduced the severity and incidence of crown rot in bread wheat, barley and durum varieties, the results showed it was slightly less effective at reducing crown rot severity in barley (average 34 per cent) compared with bread wheat (43 per cent) and durum (52 per cent) ( Figure 1 )...

The DNA test detects both Fusarium culmorum which can cause crown rot but is generally considered to be uncommon in northern NSW from previous studies and F.graminearum which is the main pathogen causing Fusarium head blight in winter cereals... In collaboration with I&I NSW District Agronomists, 132 focus paddocks were assessed around sowing in 2010 in twelve agronomy districts (10-12 paddocks/district) ranging from Dubbo in the south up to the Qld border in the north and west to Warren, Walgett and Mungindi... Distribution and potential importance of Pratylenchus neglectus in central and northern NSW Pratylenchus neglectus ( Pn ) was widespread being detected in 10 of the 12 agronomy districts but generally had a lower distribution within districts than Pt of between 10 to 75% of random paddocks...

Take the guess-work out of disease management with PreDicta B.. Changes to the recommended sampling strategy for PreDictaB in recent years have greatly improved identification of paddocks that have medium to high risk of crown rot before growers sow their crop... "In general growers have successfully reduced cereal cyst nematode (CCN) to very low levels in most paddocks but we have detected a few paddocks in South Australian and Victoria with high risk of CCN. Disease levels will build if growers over-use susceptible varieties and in these situations, PreDicta B can be used to monitor CCN levels and warn the grower of emerging risk before crop yields are affected," Dr McKay said...
