Comprehensive study reveals cost of weeds to northern growers.. The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) commissioned report Impact of weeds on Australian grain production also shows that growers are investing heavily in weed management and, despite increasing levels of herbicide resistance, in-crop weed populations are being kept low... GRDC General Manager Crop Protection Ken Young said the industry study into the cost of weeds - including yield losses and the costs of weed management practices - had input from 600 growers, as well as agronomists, consultants, agribusiness data experts and researchers...

Highlighting the true cost of in-crop weeds.. A new study shows in-crop weeds are an ongoing challenge for Australian grain growers, with overall costs estimated at $3.3 billion annually in terms of lost yield and management methods... Results from the study, available in a report entitled Impact of Weeds on Australian Grain Production , also show growers are mostly keeping in-crop weeds at low densities, despite the increasing presence of herbicide resistance...

It is understandable why growers are keen to control weeds along fence lines and crop margins... AGSWG Chairman Dr Chris Preston, from the University of Adelaide's School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, says the main factors that contribute to glyphosate resistant weeds are: intensive use of glyphosate; lack of competition; no other effective herbicides employed; and little or no other weed control practices employed... Many growers prefer to use glyphosate alone for weed control on fence lines due to its ease of use and low cost," Dr Preston said. "..

Knowledge shared is knowledge gained.. It is also reflected in the underlying knowledge sharing that helps to accelerate the research needed to keep ahead of shifting production constraints - a major example being herbicide resistance... The Updates provide growers and their advisers with up-to-the-minute reports on the progress, or outcomes, of research, both nationally and locally...

Grain growers have affirmed that our grains industry is in good shape and confidence is high, but production constraints remain front-of-mind in 2016... The Updates are also an opportunity for the GRDC to directly connect with stakeholders across the industry's value chain and take a reading on how the industry is tracking: what is changing and what growers are thinking with respect to the future of their cropping systems... Weeds and herbicide resistance remain key target areas for the GRDC in 2016...

The RCS network in the Geraldton port zone will meet in late September... "Many networks are interested in investigating soil moisture probe technology so growers have a better idea of how much sub-soil water is available to crops, and subsequently how much nitrogen they should apply," she said... "I encourage growers and other industry representatives to contact their local RCS network representatives because the GRDC wants to hear about local agronomic priorities and what's not being addressed by existing RD&E investments," he said...

Growers armed to fight herbicide resistance (West, 6 April 2010).. An army of grain growers is spreading out across Western Australia, kitted out with the latest weapons to fight herbicide resistance after attending a recent series of Integrated Weed Management (IWM) workshops in Moora, Wyalkatchem, Darkan, Nyabing, Green Range and Kendenup... Coordinated and presented by Andrew Storrie of Agronomo, the workshops highlighted the need to take action on weeds, and particularly seed banks, to delay the establishment of resistance and deal with it once it occurs.
