Delayed sowing for a number of weeks after initial rains can avoid heavy infestation on new crops but identifying optimal time without compromising yield can be difficult... The number of ascochyta lesions on leaves and stems were recorded after 1014 days and graphed as the average number of lesions per plant per site... Seedlings placed adjacent to infested stubbles recorded a maximum of 120-223 lesions per plant, while seedlings 5001000m from pea stubbles recorded 51-75 lesions per plant...

The project has demonstrated over-reliance on glyphosate will lead to glyphosate resistance evolving... The dose response experiments showed that 76 of the annual ryegrass populations were resistant to glyphosate, as were 22 of the barnyard grass, two of the liverseed grass and two of the windmill grass populations... The field trial sites were used for field days for growers and industry in both years...

The hypothesis for our studies is that optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of embryogenesis in interspecific hybrids will aid in the identification of such barriers... For hybridisation, buds of chickpea were emasculated before anthesis, and the stigma was hand pollinated with fresh pollen from C. bijugum to create the interspecific hybrids... In summary, optical microscopy studies of embryogenesis, in both selfs and hybrids, identified deleterious changes in the fertilised hybrid seed as early as 2 to 4 days after pollination in some crosses...

Left uncontrolled, weed flushes impact on soil water storage... The effects of different summer fallow management practices on soil water storage were studied using a replicated field trial with five treatments: (1) stubble harvested for straw with strict weed control, (2) stubble left standing after harvest with or (3) without weed control, and (4) stubble flattened (as with Coolamon harrow) with or (5) without weed control... We used a simulation study to generate a range of different starting subsoil water contents by changing the simulated weed management during the summer fallow...

FINAL REPORT DAW00032: Improving weed management with biserrula in the pasture phase of WA cropping systems - Dr Clinton Revell, DAFWA.. In October, the biserrula treatment had higher legume content (FOO and % of total) than the other treatments except for the subclover treatment, which had a non-significant difference in the legume % (Table 10)... At the end of the growing season in 2003 there appeared to be preferential grazing by the sheep resulting in the biserrula-based pasture having the highest legume content and lowest grass and broadleaf content...
