The black Portuguese millipede is emerging as a sporadic but damaging pest of broadacre agriculture, particularly canola, while high populations of slaters have damaged some crops in recent years... in the southern region, damage has been reported in the medium and high rainfall zones including near Wagga Wagga and Henty in new South Wales; the mid north, yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo island in South Australia; and the Western districts and Wimmera areas of Victoria... in south-eastern Australia, slaters have caused damage to wheat, oats, canola, lentils and pastures...

Australia's wheat breeding is geared to tackle long-term agronomic challenges like yield, drought, frost, disease resistance and salinity, and to deliver commercial performing varieties to Australia's wheat growers... GRDC's investment in pre-breeding research is about discovering and validating novel genes and traits, and delivering these traits non-exclusively to commercial wheat breeding programs... The focus is on key traits that will make the greatest difference to Australian wheat growers, like improved tolerance to drought, frost and salinity, and disease resistance (for example, ru...

ReduCing LOdging RiSK in iRRigATed wHeAT.. Canopy management techniques are used around the world to decrease lodging risk and increase yield in high-yielding wheat crops, and were used in Queensland's first verified eight tonnes per hectare wheat crop... Key poInts Lodging risk can be reduced by managing crops to limit canopy growth during tillering...

Changes in Septoria tritici blotch resistance to fungicides have been detected in the southern grain growing region, especially where wheat is sown into wheat stubble... Two gene mutations in STB detected by NSW Department of Primary Industries indicate resistance to some fungicides (see Case Study)... Currently none of the products with an azole/strobilurin combination in Australia used on wheat are registered for use on STB...

For example, if you have $1m of machinery and $800k of it is solely cropping related, then apportion the depreciation to the cropping enterprise...

Higher yields require increased monitoring and correct management practices to avoid yield penalties... nitrogen supply at sowing should be 100-120kg n/ha, including the amount already in the soil and amount to be applied... Trial results have shown a narrower row spacing, such as 17.5 centimetres (above), can give higher yields in irrigated wheat than wider row spacings...

Adult plant resistance is a useful trait to consider in variety selection, especially for rust resistance... Key points Adult plant resistance (Apr) to cereal fungal diseases provides protection in a crop's post-seedling stages (typically between tillering and booting, gS20-gS49)... Apr can complement a fungicide strategy by protecting, from rust, those parts of the plant most responsible for yield...

Increasing row spacing up to 30 centimetres has no effect on wheat yield, when yield potential is less than 3.5 tonnes per hectare... In a dry season, increasing row spacing from 18 to 36 and 54cm resulted in yield penalties in wheat and barley but no difference in water use was recorded with different row spacings... To establish soil nutrient status in systems using wider row spacing a modified approach to soil sampling is suggested...
