In many cropping soils of south-eastern Australia the presence of nematodes limits field crop production... Recent reports by Murray and Brennan (2009 a & b) estimated that in south-eastern Australia alone, nematodes are currently reducing wheat and barley production by 4.9% ($98 million) and 5.1% ($42 million) respectively, with losses in excess of 20% possible in the absence of appropriate control strategies... Growers can minimise yield loss caused by the nematodes in two ways...

The fungal disease 'blackleg' is the most severe disease of canola in Australia, causing yield loss and in some circumstances total crop failure... Blackleg is primarily controlled by breeding disease resistance into canola cultivars prior to release to industry...
