In the first year the trial consisted of four crops (lupin, canola, wheat and barley) planted into a pasture paddock along with self sown strips of pasture... Plant densities and damage by invertebrates was assessed at 14 and 28 days post-seeding... We observed that invertebrate species that are influenced by stubble retention practices such as bronzed field beetle, earwigs, were in higher numbers under crop residues than where stubble was absent...

Availability of new technologies is rapidly increasing.. Sometimes old technology becomes new again and I refer to the introduction of a disc- seeder into our farming system 5 years ago... I believe that we now have less risk in our system..

" Date: 24.09.2010 IMPROVING PROFITABILITY OF IRRIGATED SORGHUM THROUGH PARTIAL IRRIGATION OF LARGER AREAS.. Two main management strategies were used by growers in the 2007/08 season: (1) full irrigation, involving two irrigations, one prior to anthesis, and another at or soon after anthesis, and (2) partial irrigation, usually consisting of a single irrigation of greater than 1 ML/ha, timed to coincide with flowering... The broad objective of this research was to assess different irrigation strategies for irrigated sorghum on the heavy clay soils of the eastern Darling Downs...

To date, almost 570 Fusarium isolates have been collected at 92 sites from sorghum stalks, seedlings, panicles (heads) and stubble of commercial crops, with just over 500 isolates identified to species... There were no significant differences in yield between treatments in any of the three trials, indicating that fusarium stalk rot did not cause yield loss in the absence of lodging after the "soft" finishes experienced in the trials... The use of desiccant herbicide to aid in harvesting should be carefully evaluated in paddocks where sorghum stalk-rotting pathogens have been found in the p...

There are a range of factors that determine the ability of a seedling to emerge from depth including seed size, seed treatments, coleoptile length, soil conditions and temperature... Figure 3 Effect of sowing depth and seed treatment (dark bar treated with triadimenol on grain yield.. There are a number of studies currently examining the responses of cereal and broadleaf crops to row spacing, and also the interaction with plant population...

Table 1: Sensitive Production systems and number of growers registered for the includion of their properties in sensitive site maps in 2011 and 2012... The aim of the Sensitive Sites service is to provide growers with information on the location of any known sensitive production systems... The information on the DAFWA - GIS database is derived from grower self-reporting and while the data may not be 100 per cent accurate analysis of the other data sources shows the DAFWA - GIS database provides a reasonable indication of the numbers of growers with sensitive production systems...

High profit farming in Northern Australia - a new era in grain farming This GRDC-commissioned report states that increased new technology adoption would greatly increase grain yields in the northern region... The report states that zero-till has been shown to have the capacity of doubling farm profitability... High profit farming < Keep browsing 0 Responses to High profit farming in Northern Australia..

Social media is just one branch of the diverse range of information communication technology (ICT) tools available... In the presentation I will explore some of the examples of the use of social media and ICT that I was exposed to during a GRDC Industry Development Award (IDA) and some of my on-going exploration of these tools... While I am to find a simple free system that does what I want, I have found many other apps that could be of use for gathering and sharing information...

The blackleg fungus, Leptosphaeria maculans, has a high propensity to overcome resistance in Brassica napus (canola) cultivars... If you have a blackleg problem and are growing a susceptible cultivar your first action should be to change to a cultivar with higher levels of resistance... The best policy is to monitor the level of blackleg in your cultivar on your farm, if you observe the level of disease increasing then switch to a different group...

LEY PASTURES - THEIR FIT IN CROPPING SYSTEMS.. The pastures need to be removed earlier (e.g. June) to allow sufficient fallow length to reduce any yield penalty in subsequent crops (Fig. 4)... Growth and livestock prices fluctuate from year to year we also explore how sensitive returns are to these changes (Table 10)...
