Some wheat varieties have the ability to store water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) that can be used as a reserve of assimilates for grain filling in the event of water deficit at the end of the growing season... The results may go some way to explaining why selection for yield in Eastern Australian breeding programs has not resulted in new varieties with increased WSC accumulation, as has been observed in the West Australian and CIMMYT breeding programs (van Herwaarden and Richards, 2002)...
