While 40 millimetres of rainfall at the end of the first week of harvest 2009 did dampen Corrigin grower Lex Stone's mood for a few days, he soon found an upside... Trying to redirect the water with drainage and pumps just moved the problem elsewhere and the Stones decided to find plants that could cope with the conditions... The other part of the salinity solution for the Stones has been the introduction of new high-yielding, drought and salt-tolerant pasture varieties from the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia's breeding program run by Dr Angelo Loi, who has sourced species of serradella, biserrula and bladder clover from harsh environments around the world and adapted them for Australian conditions...
