Malting barley: storage, dormancy and processing quality

Dormancy and water sensitivity are undesirable post-harvest because barley varieties with these two traits generally need months of storage for the seed to be suitable for malting... Dr Reuss and his team investigated three main options: using agricultural chemicals to break dormancy before or after storage.. After testing a total of 20 agricultural chemicals, the team found that several were so toxic that they could not be used (they killed the barley seed), and many did not effectively break dormancy...
