The field-based trials will create a micro-atmosphere around plots of crops by raising the level of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the air around the plants to 550 parts per million (ppm) - a level the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change expects the atmosphere will exceed this century... The level of CO 2 in the atmosphere is about 380ppm... Professor David McNeil, chair of agricultural science at the University of Tasmania, who established the project with the University of Melbourne's Professor Rob Norton, says it is vital for Australian farmers reliant on producing a premium product to know what to expect from their crops as CO 2 levels rise...
