Dry springs redefining the growing season

As Nick Gillett gets ready for the 2015 winter cereal season the shadows of previous seasons cross his mind, particularly those of the past decade - which included some of the driest seasons on record... The seeding regime is changing: the aim now being to get the crop in and maturing to beat moisture stress... For example, in an average season, wheat germinating and emerging by mid-May can yield two to three tonnes a hectare, compared with well below 1t/ha for crops emerging in late June or early July...
