Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

Results suggest that multigrain and wholegrain breads are increasing in popularity as consumers seek more healthy and nutritious food... While taste and texture and value for money are the major criteria consumers use in making their decision to purchase bread in a retail store, interest in fair trade and sustainability is important to a significant number of consumers... The majority of consumers (86%) indicate that they may be willing to pay up to 10% more to purchase bread that has been derived from wheat that has been grown in a more sustainable manner...

KEYMESSAGES Hybrids from the RR system continue to outperform Open-pollinated (OP) varieties, although the new variety GT Cobra has closed the gap considerably... Triazine tolerant (TT) hybrids are to show a clear yield advantage over open-pollinated varieties during the last four years... Crusher TT was not evaluated across all sites so there is limited data regarding the range of its adaptability, but on average performed better than Snapper in the medium-high rainfall areas...

The collation of the information into a recently developed database has provided a summary of the 2005 and 2006 reports... Higher rate observed at site 1 is due to the soil having a higher soil carbon levels (1.2%) compare to site 2 (0.8%) and lower amounts of net immobilisation... When all stubble fractions are incorporated into the amount soil inorganic nitrogen immobilised can be up to 45 kg N/ha...
The trials demonstrated the benefits of hybrid vigour in canola and showed that Canola Breeders RR hybrids will provide major economic benefits to growers... AIMS The goal of this work was to test the yield potential of new RR canola hybrids developed by Canola Breeders at two locations in eastern Australia in 2008... Crop Updates is a partnership between the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia and the Grains Research & Development Corporation 184..
For dry sowing, the maximum allowable rainfall was estimated at about 5 mm for sandy, 8 mm for loamy and 10 mm for clayey textured soils, failing which a day or two after the rain (depending evaporation rate) should be allowed before dry seeding... We used two years data, a literature review and common knowledge on soil-plant water relations to estimate the maximum allowable and minimum required rainfall in order to successfully avail a dry or a wet sowing opportunity, respectively... Seedling mortality per day was calculated as percentage of the maximum emerged counts...

KEYMESSAGES Using glyphosate as an inter-row annual ryegrass control results in faster development of ryegrass resistance than when glyphosate is applied annually as a pre-sow knockdown... Resistance may occur faster than this model suggests... It is clear that many WA farmers are unknowingly introducing weed seed and herbicide resistance into their paddocks during the crop seeding process...

Foliar fungicide applications at or prior to first node stage (Z31) can be effective at controlling leaf spot diseases in susceptible wheat varieties under high disease pressure... Necrotic leaf area was determined on top 3 to 4 leaves (on 15 tillers /plot) from all plots at Z15, Z25, Z31, Z39, Z55 (i.e. before each foliar fungicide spray) and Z72, or in the case of opportunistic trials assessed at regular intervals after trial establishment... The in-furrow fungicides tested show promise for leaf spot disease control and in the future they may become an alternative to foliar applications,...

KEYMESSAGES Despite the poor production season last year, oaten hay: Continues to provide valuable control of ryegrass... Japan remains the dominant buyer of hay for dairy and beef herds China and the UAE are now competitive buyers of lucerne and oaten hay... Despite the poor quality and prices received from the wet harvest of 2011, hay production has been a profitable crop in WA over the long term as seen by these actual yield and prices modelled for wheat and oaten hay grown at Brookton...
