Subsoil acidity is becoming a real problem on many scrub soils and may be constraining plant growth... Toxicities of aluminium and/or manganese can reduce plant growth in acid soils... The rates of acidification in any soil type can be minimised by replacing the basic nutrients removed in crop produce (e.g. calcium, magnesium and potassium) as part of a fertiliser program, and by minimising the losses of soil nitrate by leaching via appropriate rotations of legume and cereal grain crops...
